DHS to postpone Real ID Requirement
The Department of Homeland Security has announced it will be extending the deadline for its REAL ID requirement for domestic air travel. Originally scheduled for May 3, 2023, the new deadline is May 7, 2025. After this date, individuals over 18 will need a REAL ID-compliant identification document in order to board any commercial domestic flight, or a federally acceptable alternative (such as a U.S. passport).
The REAL ID Act of 2005 established new security features for state- and territory-issued ID and driver’s licenses in order to board domestic flights, among other privileges. Currently, all 50 states and most territories do have REAL ID-compliant options, but also continue to issue non-compliant ‘normal’ documents as well. These ‘normal’ IDs and licenses will no longer meet the standard as of May 7, 2025.
Aside from U.S. citizens, REAL IDs are available for anyone who is lawfully present in the U.S., who can obtain a REAL ID using one of the following acceptable documents:
Unexpired foreign passport with valid U.S. Visa and approved I-94 form
Valid, unexpired Permanent Resident Card
Valid/expired Permanent Resident Card with Notice of Action (I-797 C) or Approval Notice (I-797)
Valid, unexpired Employment Authorization Document (EAD) Card (I-766) or valid/expired EAD Card with Notice of Action (I-797 C)
Unexpired foreign passport stamped “Processed for I-551”
Documents reflecting TPS or DACA benefit eligibility.
Every state or territory will have additional requirements, so please check your local Division of Motor Vehicles or equivalent for more information.
